Castle Rock High School, Leicestershire
Runner up, 2009
School award for most impressive cross-curricular approach
Timetable changes allowed staff at Castle Rock High School to adopt a truly innovative and cross-curricular approach to learning. PFE is an important element in this learning and as such is integrated across the curriculum.
An example of this is in Food Technology, which include budgeting for a weekly shop with a variety of limiting factors and dietary requirements to take into account, and in enterprise lessons students complete a project on booking a holiday, including getting to grips with exchange rates.
Representatives from relevant external agencies such as Nat West and pfeg are also invited to the school to deliver lessons and assemblies on personal finance topics.
Castle Rock’s PFE programme made good use of external support and the freedom of the curriculum. Its thorough, whole-school approach also impressed the judges.
