Castle Rock High School, Leicestershire
Runner up, 2009
School award for most innovative approach to PFE
Students in year 8 at Castle Rock High School are introduced to the concepts of budgeting by pricing up a weekly shopping basket and assessing the quality of different goods. This is tied in with the concept of fair trade, which is explored in Citizenship lessons, helping students to make better informed consumer decisions. A ‘trade justice discovery day‘ is also held, enabling students to learn about global budgets and trade, bartering and trading.
Judges found elements of this programme relevant to students’ lives, engaging, and were impressed that a number of teachers in the school were involved.
