Marianne Flanagan, Dalrymple Primary School, East Ayrshire
Runner up, 2010
Teacher award - secondary
Marianne Flanagan’s involvement in PFE began when she volunteered to become part of a working group to devise a financial education resource pack to be distributed within every school in East Ayrshire. She has since delivered several twilight CPD sessions for schools on how to introduce financial education effectively to the classroom. She has embedded financial education into her daily classroom practice by creating a class bank and introducing new schemes, for example where pupils earn wages for coming to school but also pay taxes for use of school facilities.
Marianne has been the driving force in motivating other schools to implement financial education into their curriculum and has provided a support network for members of staff who are unsure about how to incorporate this into their teaching. She has also succeeded in embedding financial education into the daily routine of her classroom.
Marianne showed a commitment to embedding PFE effectively into her school’s curriculum, and to training her colleagues to deliver effective and engaging PFE. The judges were also impressed by the links she made with a local secondary school on a transition project.
