Miss Emma Williams, The Blyth School Community College, Northumberland
Winner, 2010
Teacher award - secondary
Emma has used PFE to bring Maths to life for a range of pupils in the Blyth School and its feeder schools. In addition to incorporating PFE into Maths lessons Emma has also provided a framework for the PSHE team to deliver lessons on personal finance. In Maths she has used PFE to deliver a free standing maths qualification (FSMQ). Emma devised a programme of activities for My Money Week 2010 that involved students from a range of year groups and which also involved the feeder middle schools and primary schools. This proved highly successful in easing the transition process for pupils and is being repeated on a larger scale this year. Emma’s latest initiative has been to devise a financial inclusion programme for sixth form that brings together a number of local organisations.
Emma really stood out to the judges as she demonstrated confidence in all areas of PFE planning and delivery. The links to employability and Drama in the PFE programme she coordinates were particularly powerful and she has successfully embedded PFE across the school.
