School award for best all-round approach to PFE

page-best-approach-to-pfe There will be prizes for both primary and secondary school entries within this category.

We will be looking for an effective approach to personal finance education (PFE) for a class, year group or the whole school. This might involve a range of resources, teaching methods and experiences for young people. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a well-established programme – it could be a relatively small-scale or recent initiative that shows an interesting approach.

For example, a secondary school in Cornwall looked at how it could introduce PFE into its existing scheme of work for PSHE and Citizenship. Lessons on topics such as pocket money, where the government gets its money, Fair Trade, how students’ future lifestyle choices might be funded, and calculating the cost of furnishing and running their own living space were added across Years 7–11.

A primary school in Yorkshire developed a term’s work for Year 5 entitled ‘Does money grow on trees?’ This builds on four years’ experience developing financial awareness in the school. Children also run a successful stationery shop as a lunchtime activity.
