Student award
A new category for 2010, this award recognises a student or group of students who have taken the lead and made an outstanding or inspirational contribution to their school or community through PFE. The students will need to show how they have built on the original PFE lessons or project and developed their knowledge and ideas further to benefit their own school or other young people in the local community. Teachers are invited to make the nomination and then it’s up to the students to complete their own entry form.
1. For example, a group of Year 9 students responded to an invitation to work with Key Stage 2 children from a local school to help them set up and run a school bank and savings scheme. The students showed their leadership qualities by preparing a presentation about the role of banks and the importance of saving to show to Year 6 classes. They went on to help the children on a weekly basis for half a term until the school bank was well established.
2. For example, two boys from Year 8 spent several evenings developing an interactive game for their classmates – ‘All about spending and saving’. They had such a good response to their idea that they persuaded the Head Teacher to put the game on the school’s website. They are now working on developing a game suitable for younger children.
