Judges' Tips

ceremony_at_globe Below you can read about some features of entries from previous years which have impressed the judging panel. You do not need to tick all these boxes to stand a good chance of winning but they should provide some useful pointers:

Clearly identified PFE teaching and learning objectives, with links to outcomes

Are the learning targets clear to both teachers and learners? Can you provide evidence of completion of learning outcomes?

Model of excellence, sustainable models

For example, have you generated resources that could be used by other teachers, classes or schools?

Assessment and evaluation

Can you show you have built assessment and evaluation into the planning and development of your PFE programme?

Working in partnership

Have you worked with a partner organisation to develop or deliver your PFE programme? Perhaps you have worked with a local business, with your local authority or a bank.

You can include a supporting statement from an organisation you have worked with as part of your entry form or you can just tell us about it as part of your entry.

Involvement of senior management

Has your PFE programme managed to get the buy-in of senior management in your school? One previous winning school even developed their own school currency featuring members of the senior management team in place of the Queen!

High level of student involvement, involvement of different age groups

For example, have you involved students in the evaluation process, in the running of lessons or event? Previous winning schools have also shown how older students have worked with younger ones to pass on their PFE knowledge through a 6th form mentor scheme. Perhaps you have worked with a local primary school.

Innovative and engaging approaches relevant to students’ lives

Have you managed to really bring PFE to life for your students with activities which are relevant to their lives? If so, tell us about it in your entry! For example, one teacher held an off-timetable day for older students to think about planning their finances at University.

Cross-curricular and cross-department approaches

For example, are you from the Maths department but have inspired other subject departments to get involved in your delivery and planning of PFE? One school made use of cross-curricular links to Geography by exploring topics such as fair trade.

Supporting evidence

If you can, attach lesson plans, worksheets, photos, films, schemes of work or questionnaires – anything you feel will support your entry and bring it to life for the judges. Maybe you have a piece of student work you feel illustrates their engagement in PFE, or photos of students taking part in PFE activities.

Examples of feedback

Have you received great feedback on your school’s PFE lessons, event or programme from your students, colleagues or a partner organisation? Including quotes in your entry will bring it to life and add weight to it.
